Exploring the quality of women's musical activities through grounded theory (Case study: women participation in music classes in Brozjan)

Abstract

One of the most important problems and challenges of women in the least developed regions is related to the limitation of their cultural activities. Among the cultural activities, music activity has been the biggest one in Iran, especially among more traditional locals such as Brozjan. Moreover, this activity has lees being studied based on a sociological point of view and qualitative methodology. Thus, this research has studied the women, s musical activities in Brozjan by using of grounded theory method as a qualitative methodology. The Participants have been women who participate in music classes in the city of Brozjan. The method of sampling was non-random, and theoretical with maximum divers one. Necessary data were collected by using deep unstructured face-to-face interviews. The collected data was analyzed with aid of three phrasal coding of open, axial, and selective coding processes of Strauss and Corbin. Based on the analysis of data, the music activity of these women can be categorized and analyzed under 9 categories including the hegemonic patriarch of music space; infrastructural limitations; economic dimensions; professionalization and gradual growth of music; gender socialization; music and dualisms of private-public space; practical- a verbal challenge for women, s music recognition; cultural and social contexts of music activity and non-activity of women; individual, social, and cultural consequences of women,s music activities.
