Abstract

Video games have become very important in the last three decades. Much research has been done about the different effects of these games on gamers. These studies have shown that video games have different effects on gamers: psychological, social, political, and cultural effects. Part of this research has been about the cultural effects of video games. Iranian researchers have shown that video games have different cultural effects on gamers. The present study seeks to evaluate the results of this research. The method of this research is a systematic review. By using the systematic review method, 48 articles were selected and reviewed. This research shows that Iranian researchers have focused more on the representation and consumption of video games. There are very few articles on identity, production, and regulation. A macroscopic theoretical framework for analyzing the cultural effects of video games has yet to be observed. There is a gap between this research and social reality. It is recommended that Iranian researchers investigate the impact of video games on different identities, game production and its producers, and the impact of laws and regulations on video games. Researchers are advised to use macro-concerning frameworks like Hall and Du Gay's cultural circuit framework.
