Abstract

This study analyzes and examines the impact of religious components on the representation of the role of the angel, focusing on coffeehouse paintings and contemporary painting in Iran. Symbolism, as one of the most effective means of conveying meaning, has always been of interest to Islamic and Christian artists. Angels are fictional creatures that have been represented in various ways in literature, legends, and national and religious stories of various societies and religions. Therefore, images and paintings of angels contain secrets and shapes that make it possible to think about celestial beings. By studying these images, the effects of religious themes in art can be clearly understood. In the present study, the research method was descriptive-analytical and the method of collecting materials was library and fieldwork. The aim of this study was to examine, from a visual perspective, the process of forming the external form of the angel and to find the visual and structural manifestations of this role in the works of Muslim artists. The results obtained indicate that despite the sanctity of the angel and its place in all religions, the representation of the role of the angel in the Islamic worldview has undergone changes in accordance with historical conditions and the prevailing artistic approach in each period.
