The main issue of the present study is to conduct a qualitative reflection on the ways of representing Iranian media diplomacy in the genre of painting in the fourth decade after the revolution. The need to pay attention to this issue is especially necessary because in this decade we are witnessing the expansion of the use of social networks, new media and other art forms in international politics, and the art of painting plays a pivotal role in representing political and cultural discourses. Iranian media diplomacy also underwent extensive changes, and digital media, social networks and international platforms became the main arena for shaping public perceptions about national identity, foreign policy and Iran's position in the world. In the meantime, the art of painting, as an independent medium, has played a decisive role in reflecting, reproducing or criticizing dominant cultural and political discourses. The question is how is Iranian media diplomacy represented in the paintings of this decade? What aspects of this diplomacy are prominent and which aspects have been marginalized? What meanings, messages, and implications do these works contain for Iran’s political others? How have these works represented the dominant media themes of Iran (such as resistance, national identity, religious mission, independence, anti-arrogance, anti-Westernism, etc.) and how do these representations relate to the cultural-political developments of the fourth decade of the revolution? This research, using a qualitative approach and discourse analysis method, examines the representation of Iranian media diplomacy in paintings of the fourth decade of the revolution. The findings show that the paintings of this period represented three major discourses: the discourse of media resistance, the discourse of national identity in the global arena, and the discourse of seeking new interaction. These three discourses simultaneously reflected and shaped Iran’s political-cultural developments in the fourth decade of the revolution. The conclusion of the article shows that painting as a medium plays an active role in cultural diplomacy and can be used as a source for understanding the social construction of Iran's image in the world.
