This article examines the impact of structural and value changes in contemporary society on women’s sexual cultures in Iran. Globalization, non-linearity of the transition to adulthood, expansion of digital communications, change in the way of looking at the body, consumerism and hedonistic lifestyle, and the expansion of movements attributed to women’s rights are among the factors that have influenced women’s sexual agency. These factors have led to the formation of unconventional sexual lifestyles in different contexts, including Iran. Given the criminalization of homosexuality and bisexuality in the religious and legal system of the country and its adverse effects, it is necessary to understand the social contexts that influence this action. The present study, using content analysis of narratives obtained from in-depth interviews with ten women living in Tehran who have experience or sexual inclination with their same sex, is in search of understanding the contexts and motivations of their sexual agency. The results show: the demand and desire of men to guide women to establish same-sex relationships in the form of group sex, the lack of access of women to men and living long with their same sex in some institutional environments, and exchange for the purpose of earning income or deepening the emotional relationship, are among the most important contexts for establishing sexual relationships between women.
